The Term Wholesale Explained
Some people think working with wholesale suppliers or drop shippers means that they will magically be able to sell products for less than anybody else on the planet, for ever and ever. They will be the only one who ever gets such good prices, and they will earn millions because no competition can touch them.
When using a genuine wholesale supplier, you are going to find stores selling products at retail pricing that is lower than your suppliers’ wholesale cost. There is good reasons why you see this happen a lot, and it is important to understand it happens and what to do about it in order to sell products successfully online in this tough economy.
Again, wholesale is a relative term. Yes, genuine wholesale supplier selling at significant discounts below manufacturer’s suggested retail cost. However, you have to watch what you sell so research is a key step. Electronics, for example, are a very tough market, because everyone is trying to sell electronics online today. All the people selling wholesale products at huge discounts are so busy trying to undercut each other that they have driven the “market price” of these items down so low as to make it very difficult to make a profit, even at wholesale.
Besides the reasons mentioned above, there are also too many people who buy entire pallet loads of last year’s closeouts, liquidations, and refurbished goods, and claim that they are new. They get that junk at salvage prices, of course, and sell them dirt-cheap, fooling the customer and retailers into thinking that they have the best wholesale prices around.
I know it’s frustrating to be just starting out, and thinking that you can’t succeed because of competition from large stores. That’s just not true. We’re succeeding at it, and so are thousands of others. You just have to be willing to be flexible, and to make serious decisions for the good of your business. You may have to give up selling certain products that you personally like, in order to make money on other products whether you like them or not. If you are in business to make money, not to satisfy your personal taste.
One thing I tell people all the time is that it’s very important to work hard and jump through the hoops to form a legit home base business online. It is the right thing to do, and it’s the way to work with wholesale suppliers with huge warehouse.
Should they throw a temper tantrum, and trash or bash the wholesale supplier for simply performing the normal function or duties of a wholesale supplier? The wholesale supplier has to make money in order to stay in business but should not mislead the consumer or retailer.
